Is 'Avatar' really 'Pocahontas in Space'

As we wait breathlessly for the club reviews on 'Avatar' (probably something along the lines of 'Terminator meets the Smurfs') check out this intriguing post here and BELIEVE!

And is this further evidence towards the hypothesis that there are only seven basic plots and any permutation of them.

Who are we (and where do we live?) Part 2

Lee says he lives on the border of dork and nerd and it looks like I exist on the interface between geek and nerd.

What is for certain is that I don't think that there is a member of the club who does not live within the diagram.

One good apple

At a meeting long, long ago in a reality far, far away the Grand High Poobar of the BSFFG commanded a script, treatment or layout for a two minute sci-fi, fantasy or horror production.

The assembled cohorts must have heard the command, digested the information and immediately have forgotten it in time honoured club fashion. Except for one good apple where the synapses fired a little more deeply.

The happy result is as follows.

Classic £5 book cover

The 'Five Ping Pong Balls and a handful of Paperclips' competition was inspired by similar covers to the one below. Note the 'cunningly' disguised ping-pong balls and crinkly cellophane. Blue Peter, come back, all is forgiven.

5 Ping Pong Balls and a handful of Paperclips (Part Deux)

Part Deux

Having discussed the evolution of sci-fi book covers since the '60's and discovering that the average fee for a cover picture from that time could have been as low as £5 it was not surprising to see an example picture consisting of a few ping pong balls and some wire. It was decided to give the membership a chance to create something from this oeuvre. The rules of the competition were sufficiently slipshod to allow a wide range of submissions.
