Science Fiction Timeline

Ward Shelley's timeline of the history of science fiction to 2009 is wondrous. You may not agree with some of it but if you don't then produce your own. I bet you won't!

What does a Krell look like?

So what do we know about the Krell? Nothing much apart their manifestations in a force field, their system of ramps and steps for moving between floor levels and the famous Krell door!

So if form and function has some relation then the species was large but squat and maybe had a pointy head. So Dougal set us the task to envision a Krell and here we show the results so far.

From this we can perhaps assume that the Krell were blue, quadripedal and handed and not very happy. I can only assume that with four wooden peglegs the most common word to issue form that mouth was 'YAR'. Aardman eat your heart out!

Finally for this post we have a different story of a race from the galactic rim that had the unhappy corporeal properties of being delicious to every other species they met. They knew themselves solely as 'the People' but in the local patois of their spiral arm their gastronomic oppressors knew them as the Krell. Krell, depending on the species could mean 'tasty' or 'delicious' or 'those that we don't talk about but nom, nom, nom'. Aeons, of war, cycles of freedom and farmed enslavement made them take up the name of their enemies but reversed to show their contempt, they were the Llerk. The majority of the Llerk decided that the solution to their perennial problem was to evolve away from 'tastyness' through the use of mutagenic drugs and time dilation. This faction were known as the Light Llerk while the more paranoid and xenophobic group decided their only recourse was to fight and commit counter-genocide. They were known as the Dark Llerks and we have a particularly fine example below

Sadly during our meeting the fate of the Llerks was revisited on this excample and by the time latecomers arrived there was little left

Love the art, story and concept. Note how the buckles on the girl/woman/elf's face-mask make it look anthropomorphic. This is going to be frustrating though as there is no update schedule >:-(

Yep, our favourite hero is back and he's dating! However his choice of compadre is somewhat flawed.

...and not surprisingy sometimes art imitates life. Miss Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), according to the Mail Online, was found naked and whimpering in a New York hotel corridor, see here.

On another note look here for the University of Florida ZOMBIE ATTACK Disaster Preparedness Simulation Exercise with links to the Boston Police use of Twitter to discuss whether they would tell the public whether a human bite had led to zombie infection.

LEGO Competition Part 2 - Video

Bournemouth Science Fiction & Fantasy Group LEGO competition. These two entries needed video to demonstrate their virtuosity.

This year's competition was a deliberate attempt to 'nobble' some of our more talented members. Using a medium as simple a Lego meant their modelling skills would be brought down to the same level as the rest of us mere mortals. The problem with all cunning plans is that they are inevitably doomed to failure.

The brief was "Famous Scene from Science Fiction" in Lego in the size of a shoebox diorama. No special lLegos to be used (Star Wars etc.)

LEGO - This year's competition

The club has a long tradition of modelling competitions to the number of one, not two, not five but one, one is the number and the number shall be one; except when we have this year's and that's open now and then the number shall be two; and not one ever again. Which is sad, especially when you are as fond of cardinal numbers as I am.

This year's compo, in an attempt to nobble the people with real talent, is famous scenes from science fiction and fantasy crafted from basic LEGO. No use of the special Star Wars or similar sets allowed. No bigger than a shoebox either.

We are also, for the first time, throwing this open to our friends on the web. Same rules as above, submit photos to kev_the_mole (at) hotmail.com by the end of April 2011. One photo should show the submittee with their model and a current newspaper as a timestamp. Winners in the various categories (to be made up later) will get the usual nebulous club prizes.

Jon Rosenberg is like unto a Webcomic Demi-God. He was the pensman of the now seemingly defunct 'Goats' webcomic. The Goats multiverse is inhabited by satanic chickens, cyborg goldfish assassins and is well worth losing a large part of your life to at www.goats.com.

Webcomics, Moutains of Madness & Cult of the Claw

It's a long time since I've posted since I'm a "lazy blogger" and I'm finishing up a 300 page technical translation from German to English. If you ever want anything to take over your life I can recommend something similar. NOT!

Two brilliant webcomics, that recently appeared on my horizon are Bird Boy and Watcher of Yaathagggu.

Bird Boy has the most perfect drawing style/art that I have the pleasure to come across in a long time. Part Mayan, part Amerindian, part the artist's own style. I love it, so take a look here Bird Boy

We 'heart' Lovecraft here and a new (to me anyway) Lovecraftian webcomic is a thing of joy. Another individual drawing style and perhaps a little too much colour for this topic but try it yourself at Watcher.

While we 'heart' Lovecraft, we don't take well to people and dumb studio execs messing with the Master's works. The rumour is that Del Toro’s "At the Mountains of Madness" is binned again. The studio wanted a PG rating and Del Toro rightly insisted on an 18. Hopefully it won't die now as it's got some traction and the same dumb studio execs realise that pretty boy Tom (Cruise)is no good for the part and it should be given to Ron. We like Ron Perlman here too!

You may have seen the Cult of the Claw post on the Monsters thread. At the moment the jury is out on 'real or hoax' but if there is a Purbeck Historic Film Society then they'll be flushed out by your intrepid blogger as soon as the poxy translation is finished.

INCOMING !

First up is Skyline. Seems to be a combination of Cloverfield and Independence Day. Debuts in the UK 12/11/2010.






Second is Paul with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. This doesn't come out until February 2011 but the trailer is a hoot. Think Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead meets Roswell.

Incoming and worth a watch?

First up is #4 in the Resident Evil franchise, 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' filmed in 'the worlds' most advanced 3-D system'. Let's hope it's not all hype but it does have Milla so that's one thumb up already :-)



but the big one for me is the announcement of 'Priest' in May 2011. See the trailer and can you spot the 'Man with No Name'? Sorry it's not embedded but IMDb doesn't like me :-(

Books - don'tcherluv 'em

There's something about the feel/smell/ownership of a new book. You just don't get any of those sensations with an e-reader. You can fall asleep and your book will fall on the floor; it's still readable in the morning. You can drop your book in the bath while stretching for the cold beer and once you've finished cursing and dried it out it will be still readable. E-readers don't hack it but we are going to be forced that way because it's in the interests of the publishers. Look at the number of bookshops gone due to the efforts of Amazon who coincidentally sell their own e-reader. The future is digital, my friends, and we will all be poorer for it.

Q. Why am I waxing lyrical on books?

A. Because there is a new Pratchett out tomorrow and I love Pratchett! Well, the 50% that are actually on song. This time, having temporarily forsaken the world of mercantilism, we will have a 'Witches' story. But not only witches but also the Nac Mac Feegle and as his last effort of 'Wintersmith' was a bit of a bust we are expecting great things from this one on the 50% rule. Well, it's not so much of a rule as a general observation but it seems to work.

The book's called 'I Shall Wear Midnight" and is out in the UK tomorrow 2nd Sept 2010.

The Wee Free Men also have a film coming out sometime in 2010 directed by Sam Raimi. Let's hope Hollywood does not do it's usual studio hatchet job on a much loved novel.

The Walking Dead

Allegedly this will air on FX UK in October to stop transatlantic downloading

Monsters Coming soon

The hype's there and the shaky hand-held camera shots. It is incredible, however, when you take into account this whole movie was filmed by two (count them!) people and the CGI was done on a home computer.

Let's hope it's good after a pretty sucky year!
